Las Vegas to Palm Springs via ?

We will be in Vegas for 5 nights (Sun-Thurs) in August and will be leaving on Friday heading for Palm Springs (eventually) for a hotel booking on Sunday

Therefore, we have two nights to %26#39;spare%26#39; to explore the area around Las Vegas and beyond before our Palm Springs stop

Have been to the Grand Canyon and preferably didn%26#39;t want to drive hundreds of miles off the path between the two cities

Any ideas where to go/where to spend the two nights?

Two nights is a lot to fill in. I%26#39;d personally spend an extra night in Vegas but that%26#39;s just me! With that one night I%26#39;d suggest staying at 29 Palms and checking out Joshua Tree National Park with its awesome scenery and amazing cactus vegeatation. Be aware that it will be brutally hot there in August, as will just about anywhere in that immediate area.

rick, please investigate thoroughly travel in such hot weather. You realize how hot it is in Vegas in August? Well 29 Palms and the Cochella Valley are hotter than Vegas. Hydration, shade, mimimal exercize etc. are mandated. Think about 90*F at night. Have a good adventure.

I lived in 29 Palms for 6 years, so I have to also say this is a great stop to make. When you leave Vegas, you can exit the 15 just past Primm, and take the back roads through the Mojave Natl Forest. Vegas to 29 Palms is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours. I would stay at the 29 Palms Inn, lovely pool, great food, very unique little Inn, they grow their own fruits and vegetables! From 29 Palms to Palm Springs is about 40 mintes, take the 62 to the 10.
